Utilities Literacy

Keeping people connected to energy, water and communications

From 1 September 2017 the refunded Utilities Literacy Program has been renamed Connect.ed. The program has become an integrated service: each participating agency will deliver training for community workers, information sessions to community groups and provide individual case management for clients in their respective geographical areas.

The new program will also offer home energy visits from qualified assessors, and from 2018 education on telecommunications will join the current content on electricity, gas and water. UCWB will provide a central Clearing House, with a website we expect will become an information-rich resource.

We look forward to working with you to provide vital support keeping South Australians connected to essential services.

Do you have clients who struggle with electricity, gas and water bills? Would you like to help them more, but don't know how?

Free training and development is available to community sector workers and volunteers who support financially vulnerable members of the community.

Training for Community Workers will teach you about:

• Electricity, Gas and Water in South Australia
• Reading and understanding meters and bills
• Using energy and water efficiently at home
• How to choose an energy retailer and get a good deal
• Concessions, complaints, disputes and hardship
• New technologies and tariff reform

Current Courses available

The Connect.ed team at UCWB offers either 2-day training or a set of half-day workshops. Community workers can attend any of the modular-based workshops, and participants who attend all five workshops currently offered will receive a Utilities Literacy Community Educator Certificate.

Introduction to Utilities Literacy for Community Workers

The Connect.ed team has developed an introductory half-day workshop in utilities literacy. The workshop distils key messages from our training package with a focus on affordability, including bill reading, energy and water efficiency, hardship and concessions.

We are also happy to tailor a presentation to the needs of your staff. See our contact details below.

Continuing professional development available

We offer two extension workshops that have been very well received: Innovations and Consolidation.

Building on the Utilities Literacy for Community Workers 2-day training, this half-day workshop will present the latest updates on innovations in the residential energy sector. More about solar power systems, including what questions to ask to know whether it’s a good investment right now; solar system leasing and solar power purchase agreements; household storage batteries; and the latest on demand/capacity tariffs and smart meters.

Practise and extend what you learned in the 2-day Utilities Literacy training – more on home energy auditing, including practical exercises and useful resources; using the new “Guide to electricity, gas and SA Water services” when assisting clients; and sharing real experiences with other workers to consolidate skills and identify opportunities to work together to provide better utilities literacy support.

Information sessions for community groups

The Connect.ed team is now offering tailored information sessions for community groups. These sessions of one to two hours focus broadly on energy and water concerns in the community as well as valuable information on services available to assist managing household utilities.
