Baptist Care's Friendship Program needs volunteers  north  east

Baptist Care are looking to recruit 30 volunteers, both men and women, who live in the North or North Eastern part of Adelaide to be part of a rewarding program which gives local volunteers the opportunity to become a friend with someone who has arrived to Australia as a refugee or asylum seeker.  The current focus is on the North and North-Eastern areas of Adelaide. This is part of a Baptist Care's Friendship Program, helping refugees and asylum seekers to settle in to Northern and North Eastern Adelaide.

Volunteer mentors are carefully matched with someone who arrived to Adelaide as a refugee or asylum seeker.  Men are matched with male participants and women with female participants. They then meet with their "new friend" at a time and a place that suits them both, and choose together what they would like to do. Potential activities for volunteers and their "new friend" include sharing a meal, practising conversational English, going for a walk, visiting places of interest, explaining about Australian culture and customs, and helping their new friend to be better connected to their local community. Volunteers also get the chance to learn about their new friend's culture and what life is like for them. The time commitment is only 6 hours per month (for at least 6 months) - but this can make a huge difference in the lives of new arrivals.  Support and encouragement is provided by the Friendship Program Coordinator.
