Community Links

UCWB and Kapara Residential Care formed an innovative and socially inclusive program in 2014 which was tailored to provide a meaningful activity for older people and to keep them connected to the community.

They formed a Telephone Club and began sharing their experiences via the phone of living in a residential setting to isolated older people living in the community. The calls not only keep them in touch but they help to demystify living in aged care for those who may be considering moving into residential care.

The Telephone Club has grown to include more than 200 older people from across the community who, with a dedicated team of 50 volunteers, make regular phone calls from Kapara and Milpara Residential Care (both ACH Group) and Marten Aged Care (Allity).

The Telephone Club has built friendships, grown social interaction and a sense of belonging to a valued community group. Keeping connected promotes health and wellbeing, a sense of purpose and is another example of how UCWB is building stronger communities.
