Aged care services

Your first step towards accessing home care services is to contact My Aged Care, an Australian Government service, to find out about the different types of aged care services and their eligibility requirements.

My Aged Care will ask you to participate in an initial telephone screening to determine the best way to meet your needs before being referred to either the Regional Assessment Service (RAS) or the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) for face-to-face assessments.

Entry-level support

If you require basic support, you will be referred to the Regional Assessment Service (RAS) who will visit you for a face-to-face assessment to see if you are eligible for services under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme.

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme provides some help with daily tasks to continue living at home. Considered an ‘entry-level’ programme, they may be suitable for people who have had a setback and need a little support to get back on their feet.

If you are assigned Commonwealth Home Support Programme you can choose a service provider, such as UCWB, to deliver your home care services.

Higher levels support

If you require a higher level of support, you will be referred for an Aged Care Assessment (ACAT) team member who will visit you for a face-to-face assessment to see if you are eligible for a Home Care Package.

Home Care Packages provide care and support beyond the level of a Commonwealth Home Support Programme.

There are four Home Care Package levels of support:

  • Level 1: Basic level support
  • Level 2: Low-level support
  • Level 3: Intermediate level support
  • Level 4: High-level support

Your initial ACAT assessment will determine the level you commence your Home Care Package. As your needs increase, additional assessments will enable you to receive higher levels of support.

After being ‘approved’ for a Home Care Package you will be placed in a national queue and be required to wait until you are ‘assigned’ a Home Care Package by the Australian Government. When you have been assigned a Home Care Package you can choose a service provider, such as UCWB, to deliver your home care services.
